While many analytics platforms are available, Veering’s strength is in using these to communicate the message encoded in the data in a meaningful, quantifiable, and repeatable manner. To do this we strive to provide the following;

• Clear and interpretable visualisations;

  • Visualisations are the primary medium of communication in data science and careful selection of the methods used to encode the data ensures that the cognitive load to interpret the data is minimised.

• Meaningful modelling of data;

  • While modelling is often thought of in a predictive sense, it is also a robust method for interpretation. By fitting an appropriate model to a dataset, one can understand the relationships between predictor variables and a response variable. By fitting appropriate models, the relative importance of these relationships can be understood. Unfortunately, better fitting models often yield less interpretable results. By carefully selecting algorithms suitable for the situation the greatest amount of information can be inferred.

• Providing a statistical interpretation to what is represented;

  • Yacht racing is a dynamic and varied environment, and even with the best sensors and methods it is not possible to capture all variables. With such an incomplete picture it is only possible to use statistics to interpret the data. Unfortunately, as with any approximation, the more easily a statistic can be interpreted the less value it may hold. We aim to simplify more complex concepts such as distributions, variance and confidence levels so as a more complete picture can be painted without the need for an in-depth knowledge of statistics.

Distribution of polar boat speeds for 2 crossover sails at 100TWA in 14Knts of wind. While the average of the red sail was higher, there was a 25% chance that this was observed by chance.

Distributions for the same sail crossovers at 110TWA in 20Knts of wind. In this case the probability of the observed improvement occouring due to chance is only 7%.. While red was better in both cases, this improvment can only be counted on in winider conditions.
